Experience Surabaya
This international residency welcomes applications from artists, writers, curators, researchers, designers, and cultural practitioners working in diverse media for stays of at least one month. The program is largely self-directed, encouraging participants to pursue their own projects with independence. To complement this, Rentang also offers a supplementary program that introduces artists to the local surroundings and Surabaya’s dynamic art scene while fostering dialogue and exchange among residents.
Selected applicants are encouraged to create a workbook that documents the whole journey of their residency. This workbook can consist of archives, photos, illustrations, text, etc.

Focused on urban, industrial, ecological, and social studies.

For artists developing specific works responding to local context.
Program Flow
Online meeting as introduction of the residency plan, Rentang team and Surabaya art ecosystem.
Process of doing research, experimentation, and community interaction. It also enriched with Surabaya Art Tour that invite artist to visit several studios, institutions, galleries, and collectives in Surabaya.
Curatorial support from the Rentang Team and discussion on how the residency progress.
Optional program in forms of presentation, discussion, performance, etc. It aims to interact with the local ecosystem not only as a source of knowledge but also as the audience of the residency.
Publication of the work book that consists of archive, documentation, and anything else worth keeping. Besides this, there will be also podcast with the artist discussing their experiences residing in Surabaya.
